Bowling Green State University Changes Program Name to Include ‘Family Science’
NCFR is pleased to announce that Bowling Green State University (BGSU) has changed the name of its bachelor’s degree and minor in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences to Human Development and Family Science (HDFS). The previous name was Human Development and Family Studies.
The HDFS bachelor’s degree at BGSU is CFLE-approved, meaning program graduates can apply for the Certified Family Life Educator credential through an abbreviated process with NCFR (learn about CFLE program approval).
Their bachelor's degree is guided by a life-span human development perspective and a Family Science context to provide students with an in-depth understanding of individuals and families. Their program prepares graduates to work in fields such as Family Life Education, community outreach services, child and youth programming, family and community development, social service delivery, elder care facilities, child advocacy, and more.

Considering a Name Change for Your Program?
Family Science is the name and disciplinary identity supported by NCFR for the scientific study of families and close interpersonal relationships. More than 170 academic degrees and departments use the Family Science name for their curricula because it is the clearest and most accurate label for this discipline.
Using the term Family Science expands visibility of programs among prospective students, their families, and other institutions. It increases credibility by demonstrating support of a proven scientific discipline that has developed a rigorous base of scholarly knowledge and an evidence-based foundation for graduates in their careers. It also allows faculty and graduates to adopt a respected professional identity of Family Scientist, and to make an even greater impact in their work by uniting under the Family Science umbrella.
