Joyce Serido Selected as New Editor of NCFR’s Family Focus
SAINT PAUL, Minn. — The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) announces Joyce Serido, Ph.D., as new editor of NCFR’s Family Focus. Dr. Serido takes over the role from Ted Futris, Ph.D., CFLE.
Dr. Serido is a retired professor and extension specialist in family social science at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Her research interests include family finance, family financial socialization, financial behavior in romantic relationships, and economic well-being among emerging adults.
Dr. Serido has developed programs and educational materials to improve family financial well-being. Throughout her tenure, Dr. Serido has championed many programs, accumulating more than $2 million in external funding as both a PI and co-PI, providing families and extension educators with access to research-based resources on financial capability, as well as financial well-being and life lessons for young adults.
Dr. Serido is an accomplished researcher. She has an impressive record in academia, extension, writing and editing translational materials, as well as a clear understanding of the focus and direction of the Family Focus section. Dr. Serido brings depth and richness to Family Focus serving as editor of the Journal of Family and Economic Issues and associate editor for both the Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning and the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal. Her expertise and experience are an excellent fit for Family Focus.
Family Focus, a section of the quarterly NCFR Report member magazine, contains articles on family research, practice, policy, and education. Its purpose is to share information on Family Science in a translational way and to provide readers with the implications of family research.
As editor, Dr. Serido will contribute to the discipline of Family Science by determining relevant topics to address and identify authors for articles. As Family Focus Editor, her goal is to continue bridging research-to-practice by engaging family scholars and professionals in the co-creation of articles that are relevant with meaningful, action-oriented implications. Dr. Serido will work with NCFR's senior director of research, family, and policy education throughout the editorial process. Dr. Serido officially began her role in October 2023, working alongside Dr. Futris and has already begun accepting papers for upcoming Family Focus issues for which she is editing.
“We are thrilled that Dr. Serido will be the new Family Focus editor,” says Jennifer Crosswhite, Ph.D., CFLE, NCFR’s senior director of research, family, and policy education. “She brings a wealth of experiences to this role as an editor and extension specialist, and her ability to translate Family Science into concrete implications for families and practitioners.”
Dr. Crosswhite also expresses gratitude for Dr. Futris and his tenure as editor, especially during the challenging times brought about by COVID-19. “Dr. Futris was able to develop themes in response to current events, including the pandemics, and was able to shine a light on families, and individuals that are often overlooked and most vulnerable.”
