Kent State Changes HDFS Program Name to Include 'Family Science'

Kent State University

NCFR is pleased to share that Kent State University has changed the name of its program in the School of Lifespan Development and Educational Services to Human Development and Family Science. The program name previously was Human Development and Family Studies.

Kent State's HDFS bachelor's degree is CFLE-approved, meaning program graduates can apply for the Certified Family Life Educator credential through an abbreviated process with NCFR (learn about CFLE program approval). Their bachelor's and master's programs
both offer an interdisciplinary approach to individual and family development. Students receive the knowledge and skills needed to help individuals and families across the lifespan to flourish in a global society.

Considering a Name Change for Your Program?

Family Science is the name and disciplinary identity supported by NCFR for the scientific study of families and close interpersonal relationships. More than 150 academic degrees and departments use the Family Science name for their curricula because it is the clearest and most accurate label for this discipline.

Using the term Family Science expands visibility of programs among prospective students, their families, and other institutions. It increases credibility by demonstrating support of a proven scientific discipline that has developed a rigorous base of scholarly knowledge and an evidence-based foundation for graduates in their careers. It also allows faculty and graduates to adopt a respected professional identity of Family Scientist, and to make an even greater impact in their work by uniting under the Family Science umbrella.
