Kevin M. Roy Elected to NCFR Board of Directors
SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA — The National Council on Family Relations’ (NCFR) membership has elected Kevin M. Roy, Ph.D., as a member-at-large of the NCFR Board of Directors. Dr. Roy is professor of Family Science at the University of Maryland College Park School of Public Health. He is recognized as an expert in the field of fatherhood research, with two decades of experience working with low-income families and community-based parenting programs. His research focuses on the life course of young men on the margins of kin networks and the workforce, as they transition into adulthood and fatherhood.
At NCFR, Dr. Roy has served as chair of the Elections Council, chair of the Theory Construction and Research Methodology Workshop, and held offices in several other member groups. He is the 1999 recipient of the Margaret Feldman Policy Award. Dr. Roy served as a deputy editor for the Journal of Marriage and Family (JMF) and has published over 50 articles and chapters, in JMF and other leading Family Science journals.
Dr. Roy is a current editor for the new Sourcebook on Family Theories and Methodologies (2022). His book Nurturing dads: Social initiatives for contemporary fathering in the ASA Rose Series was published by Russell Sage Foundation Press in 2012. He received degrees in Human Development & Social Policy at Northwestern University (PhD 1999, MS, 1995) and in International Affairs with a focus on Soviet Studies at Georgetown University (BSFS, 1988).
In his candidate statement Dr. Roy expressed his excitement to represent members on the board: "My research and practice have found a home at NCFR, where I have worked to expand the discipline of Family Science and to support equity, inclusion, and leadership among underrepresented scholars. I will continue to build a unique coalition of membership, board, and administration, with strengths in research, practice, and policy to confront urgent challenges within our own divided communities. As a board member-at-large, I will nurture a shared commitment to promote the health and wellbeing of all families."
Dr. Roy and the other newly elected leaders will assume their roles at the 2022 NCFR Annual Conference, planned for Nov. 16-19.
