Member News: Students Recognized for Outstanding Scholarship and Service

Justin M. Petkus, M.S., CFLE, CCLS, was awarded the annual Student Research Recognition Award by the Association of Child Life Professionals at their annual conference in Chicago for his work, "The Use of Parental Holding to Manage Children’s Anxiety with Venipuncture: Experiences from Qatar." Petkus is a Ph.D. student in global family health and well-being at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is a visiting doctoral candidate at the University of Luxembourg. Petkus was the 2018 recipient of the CFLE Special Recognition Award in recognition for his important work in bringing recognition to Family Life Education as an appropriate and effective approach to home visiting and his advocacy for global Family Life Education.

Ava Marie Simmons, a family and child studies major at McNeese State University, was featured in a story on the U.S. Army website for her work on a service-learning project as part of her course on Family Life Education methods. Simmons, an army spouse herself, chose to conduct an initial needs assessment on families who utilize YMCA food banks at two base locations on the Island of O'ahu, Hawaii. The information she gathered helped YMCA staff and volunteers know what items they should focus on collecting during food drives. Read full story.
