In Memoriam: George Kurian

NCFR member George Kurian, Ph.D., died on June 27, 2018, at age 89. Dr. Kurian was the founder and editor of the journal, Journal of Comparative Family Studies, which continues to this day. He was the 2010 recipient of Jan Trost Award from NCFR, which recognized his lifetime of achievement in research, teaching, and service to international families. 

Born in Kerala, India in 1928, Dr. Kurian completed his Ph.D. at Utrecht University, Holland, and taught at Victoria University, New Zealand, before moving to Canada. He taught at the University of Calgary from 1966 to 1998, where he retired as professor emeritus of sociology.

During his academic career, Dr. Kurian published seven books, 30 peer-reviewed papers, 27 chapters in edited books and countless international conference presentations. He is survived by his wife, Susannah Kurian, Ph.D. 

A funeral was held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Calgary on July 7, 2017.
