NCFR to Observe Transgender Day of Remembrance at 2019 Annual Conference

The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), observed annually on Nov. 20, coincides with the opening day of the 2019 NCFR Annual Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. Please read on for background and for more details about NCFR's observance.

Two conference events are planned for TDOR on Wednesday, Nov. 20:

  • NCFR’s GLBTSA Focus Group will host a Transgender Day of Remembrance Memorial from 4:455:15 p.m. in Texas Ballroom A of the conference hotel (session #146A on the program). All are welcome to attend and pay their respects during this solemn vigil. This memorial will honor the victims of anti-transgender violence.

  • A Transgender Wall of Remembrance will be displayed on the second floor of the conference hotel, near the conference registration desk.

On this wall will be posted names, photos, and stories of transgender people who were murdered in the past year. Quotes from scholarly research regarding anti-transgender violence will be shared alongside the wall of remembrance, and any conference attendee will be welcome to post their quotes, as well.

You are invited to spend some time reading the names and quotes on the wall and reflecting on how we can honor these victims’ memories by working to make the world a safer and more accepting place for all.

About the Transgender Day of Remembrance

This important day honors and remembers victims of anti-transgender violence. GLAAD, a primary organization that works on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy, has compiled resources and information about TDOR on its website.

Transgender women of color are disproportionately the victims of hate-based violent attacks, and murders. The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — the largest civil rights organization in the U.S. working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality — documented these trends in its report, A National Epidemic: Fatal Anti-Transgender Violence in America in 2018.

These guidelines from GLAAD provide information about respectful reporting and response to reports of hate-based crimes against transgender persons.

Additionally, a higher proportion of murders of transgender women of color have occurred in Texas than in other states. Texas has been identified as a key state for intervention by the HRC to counter anti-transgender violence. So far in 2019, four transgender women of color have been murdered in Texas (two in Dallas, two in Houston). Read their stories on the HRC website.

As you prepare for the conference, please also refer to this academic reference guide for talking about transgender experiences, identities, and existences at conference.
