Participants Needed for Study on Romantic Relationships and Relocation

A group of researchers from the University of Toronto, including NCFR member Rebecca Horne, M.S., have launched a study to track couples who are planning to relocate to a different city or country for one partner's job in the upcoming year—a growing trend in our fast-paced, mobile world and a common experience for academics in particular.

Here are the full details:

Are you in a romantic relationship and plan to move with your partner in the near future?

The research team is interested in surveying couples before they relocate, soon after they relocate (i.e., 5 brief biweekly surveys beginning weeks after the move), and long after they have relocated (i.e., follow-up surveys 3, 6, 9, and 12 months later). Given the longer-term commitment we require in this study, participants can earn up to $120 CAD ($240 CAD per couple) for their valuable time and efforts.

To be eligible for the study, romantic partners must be:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Currently living together
  • Able to read and write in English
  • Planning to relocate for jobs/schooling between one month from now up to one year from now
  • Both willing to participate in the study

If you meet this criteria and are interested in participating in the study, email [email protected] with the subject line "Interest in Romantic Relationships and Relocation Study". The researchers will arrange a time to chat on the phone with both partners to confirm eligibility. Note: any personal information will be kept strictly confidential and only used for the purposes of contacting potential candidates to confirm eligibility.

This research has been approved by the University of Toronto Research Ethics Board, Protocol # 36971.
