Diane W. Bales, Ph.D., University of Georgia Extension human development specialist, child life program director & professor of Human Development and Family Science, has received the Engaged Scholar Award from UGA Public Service and Outreach. The award recognizes a tenured associate or full professor who has made significant career-spanning contributions to the University of Georgia’s public service mission through scholarship, service-learning opportunities for students and campus leadership. Two Family Science and Human Development faculty were granted tenure at Western Michigan University: Jou-Chen Chen, Ph.D., CFLE; and Kimberly Doudna, Ph.D., both promoted to associate professor. Read more
Faculty from Family Science and Human Development (FSHD) at Western Michigan University are looking to better support their students’ well-being during professional working experiences by addressing three need-based priorities through a grant. Antoinette London-Johnson Wright, Ph.D., associate professor of Family Science and Human Development, will project lead the expansion of community-based research experiences and partnerships. Students will be provided with the opportunity to dive into community-based research projects that will boost their grasp of Family Science and human development research, honing soft skills such as communication and collaboration, and hard skills such as data collection and recruitment working with diverse individuals and families. Jessica Marmolejos, M.S., a doctoral student in the Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) at the University of Missouri, has been selected as an alternate for the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program, a nationally competitive program that supports cultural exchanges between the U.S. and other countries. Jessica proposed to conduct research surrounding the Afro-descendant population in Barranquilla, Colombia to explore how Afro-Colombians learn about race and form their identity outside of the national identity of mestizaje, or multiculturalism, as well as how racial socialization processes and one’s physical phenotypes together influence identity formation among Afro-Colombians. Karen Talley, B.S., a doctoral student in the Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) at the University of Missouri, received an honorable mention for her application to the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) with the National Science Foundation (NSF), which recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students with the potential for significant achievements. Karen proposed a mixed-method study to understand what aspects of romantic life reviews might relate to subjective well-being for rural older adults. Read more
Jennifer Zorotovich, Ph.D., CFLE, will earn full professor this fall at Georgia Southern University in the Human Development and Family Science program. Dr. Zorotovich was also featured in GSU’s faculty spotlight. Read more
