University of Houston Changes Program Name to Include 'Family Science'

University of Houston

NCFR is pleased to share that the University of Houston's Department of Psychological, Health, & Learning Sciences has changed the name of its undergraduate major to Human Development and Family Sciences (previously Human Development and Family Studies).

This program is also approved by NCFR as meeting the criteria for the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) credential. A minor in Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) is also available.

The University of Houston's HDFS program provides a broad study of the intellectual, emotional, social and moral development of individuals and families. The curriculum focuses on contemporary families, parent education and early childhood education, among many other topics, and prepares graduates for such careers as elementary school or special education teacher, human services administrator or day care rirector.

Considering a Name Change for Your Program?

Family Science is the name and disciplinary identity supported by NCFR for the scientific study of families and close interpersonal relationships. More than 150 academic degrees and departments use the Family Science name for their curricula because it is the clearest and most accurate label for this discipline.

Using the term Family Science expands visibility of programs among prospective students, their families, and other institutions. It increases credibility by demonstrating support of a proven scientific discipline that has developed a rigorous base of scholarly knowledge and an evidence-based foundation for graduates in their careers. It also allows faculty and graduates to adopt a respected professional identity of Family Scientist, and to make an even greater impact in their work by uniting under the Family Science umbrella.
