Zippy's Video of the Week: Conan During the Writer's Strike

This week, the Writers Guild of America went on strike for the first time in 15 years, halting production on films and TV shows and turning the lights off at late-night comedy shows. The union seeks higher minimum wages due to conditions exacerbated by the demand of more scripted entertainment for streaming platforms.

During the the 100-day writer's strike of 2007-08, Late Night with Conan O'Brien was the first late-night show to return to TV. Although supporting the strike, O'Brien went back on the air so that his non-writing staff would not be laid off. Without his writers, O'Brien tapped into his improvisational skills and created many hilarious and beloved moments which included zip-lining through his audience, heckling Brian Williams, and starting a mock feud with Comedy Central's late-night hosts.

This week's video features what might be his best remembered recurring bit from the writer's strike where he tries to see how long he can spin his wedding ring on the Late Night desk. Truly, O'Brien was a master at spinning comedy gold out of nothing.
