Zippy's Video of the Week: The Global City Population Race

Why look at just raw data when you can make it race instead? This week's Zippy video shows the world's most populous cities from 1500 to 2018 in a bar chart format that moves over time.

John Burn-Murdoch created the animation for the Financial Times, and narrates how populations have risen and fallen over time in relation to world events such as the Industrial Revolution. While his commentary is worth a listen (Vijayanagar, we hardly knew ye), a sped-up version of the data race is also available to watch.
