Zippy's Video of the Week: A Super Honor for Mario

This week, the National Recording Registry announced its annual list of 25 recordings that will be added and preserved in its archive in the U.S. Library of Congress. These recordings are selected as noteworthy examples of “the defining sounds of the nation’s history and culture.” Included among Mariah Carey’s "All I Want for Christmas is You" and Madonna’s 1984 album Like a Virgin, is a somewhat odd choice: the original 1985 theme from Super Mario Bros.

Known officially as the "Ground Theme," the tune was composed for Nintendo by Koji Kondo. It is the first music from a video game to enter the registry, which the library called “the most recognizable video game theme in history”. The theme has appeared in countless Mario-related incarnations and variations over the years, including a new movie released last week.

To celebrate this achievement, this week's video includes variations of the main theme with visuals from Super Mario games over the past 30-plus years. See the full list of this year's additions to the National Recording Registry here
