The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) — the premier professional association for understanding and strengthening families through interdisciplinary research, theory, and practice, has a position open for a director of marketing & communications.

Position Summary

The Director of Marketing and Communications has the primary responsibility to develop and execute the association’s marketing and communications strategy. This position is a key member of the senior management team assisting with the development of the organization’s strategic plans and policies. The Director of Marketing and Communications is an exempt position reporting to the Executive Director.


Essential Job functions

Marketing and Communications

Develop and execute organization-wide internal and external strategic marketing and communications plans and programs consistent with NCFR objectives and brand.

  • Establish and maintain a consistent organization image; develop brand guidelines and ensure consistent adherence to brand image for all marketing and communications activities throughout all materials, programs and events
  • Provide marketing and communications expertise to other directors and coordinate the marketing strategies and plans for all programs, publications, and services
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of marketing and communications plans and programs, including the development of methods for gauging program effectiveness
  • Research and analyze demographics, member information, trends, related associations, technological developments, economic factors, etc. that are relevant to identifying opportunities and/or supporting management decision-making. Recommend enhancements and changes to programs and services
  • Coordinate the design and development of marketing and communications materials and tools
  • Identify, negotiate with, direct, and evaluate outside vendors that provide design, materials development, and communications services
  • Coordinate all advertising activities
  • Develop a broad range of print and digital marketing and communication materials as needed

Conference Planning

  • Provide strategic direction and oversee the marketing and communications for the annual conference and other special events and meetings
  • Provide a timely and comprehensive evaluation of the annual conference including member/attendee satisfaction, attendance data, financial results and other outcomes
  • Oversee and fulfill conference sponsorship program; develop and sell opportunities; plan, execute, and monitor fulfillments

Department Management

  • Supervise the Communications Manager; hire and train staff as needed; set clear expectations and provide regular performance feedback; institute development and/or improvement plans that encourage professional growth; motivate staff to perform to the best of their abilities and be accountable for results
  • Interpret, communicate and support organization policies, mission, and values
  • Prepare, manage and monitor the department’s budgets and forecasts; manage resources effectively



Education and Experience Required


A Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, non-profit management, or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree is preferred.


Five years of experience in marketing and communications, preferably for a professional association. Two years of experience in a management role is preferred. Knowledge of a broad range of communications and marketing activities and strategies.

An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted as determined by senior management.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Language: Read, analyze, and interpret documents and information of moderate to high complexity; respond to inquiries or complaints in an articulate and constructive manner; write speeches and articles for publication; make effective presentations and respond to questions before large and small groups; speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations. Excellent writing skills, including proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Math: Understand and use mathematical concepts such as probability, statistics and other mathematical operations to analyze data and draw valid inferences.
  • Reasoning: Identify problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Understand both concrete and abstract concepts and apply them in context.
  • Computer: Utilize Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office products, including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver; Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; and database and association management software. Experience working with social media platforms and websites, including web development and producing content for the web. Understand relational databases at a conceptual level. Advanced Excel skills. Experience with survey software (e.g. SurveyMonkey) and marketing automation software (e.g. ActiveCampaign).
  • Interpersonal: Interact effectively with a broad range of individuals. Possess strong customer service skills. Work both collaboratively and independently; resolve conflicts constructively; remain calm and professional under pressure; adapt readily to changes in priorities and schedules; multitask.
  • Management: Set priorities; manage multiple tasks and deadlines. Direct and supervise others. Work independently as well as collaboratively. Highly organized.
  • Other: Understand data collection and market research techniques.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent to continuous use of a computer, phone and other office equipment
  • Frequently to continuous attention to details and deadlines
  • A full week of overnight travel to attend the annual conference
  • Occasional weekend and evening work are necessary
  • Generally, work in an office environment with a moderate level of noise. Infrequent exposure to unpleasant elements is possible as related to travel, conference and meeting attendance and other job responsibilities
