Summary
The number of international graduate students in the United States (U.S.) is increasing, and their contribution to the U.S economy is growing. International students add to the cultural diversity of departments and campuses across the United States, and yet, they face challenges navigating graduate school (e.g., assumptions of homogeneity, academic and linguistic competence, varied perceptions of gender roles and expectations). The purpose of this panel is to discuss these challenges as well as opportunities experienced by four international graduate students. Our session will be beneficial for current international graduate students, domestic students, and faculty and administration alike providing tips and strategies to overcoming challenges and creating more learning opportunities.
Objectives
-- To understand the value of embracing international graduate students, both culturally and academically.
-- To engage in meaningful discourse on the diverse experiences of international graduate students, which includes identifying challenges and opportunities that vary within this heterogeneous population.
