The Mid-Atlantic Council on Family Relations (MACFR) is holding its annual conference at Hostetter Chapel in Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Sponsored by the Messiah College Department of Human Development and Family Science, the conference will feature NCFR President Bill Allen as the keynote speaker.

Despite years of increased scholarship regarding the importance of understanding male familial roles in family life across the lifespan, social service agencies serving families still struggle to find ways to be more welcoming to men and boys. The staff of many behavioral health services catered to families are still predominately comprises females. This potentially presents problems for males entering the family mental health field as providers, or coming to agencies as clients.

In this talk, Dr. Allen will explore some of the issues facing family service organizations (broadly conceptualized) that are interested in being more welcoming of men and boys. Strategies for assessing and increasing successful male engagement are also suggested for educators and practitioners interested in getting more males “in the therapy room.”

Approved for 3 Contact hours / .3 CEU CFLE Continuing Education Credit.
