The Effect of the Opioid Epidemic on Ohio Families: Part 1 of 2

AFFILIATE COUNCIL EVENT
Free Archived Webinar

Presented by Philip Atkins, Ph.D., LICDC-CS, OCPC, Director, Mental Health & Recovery Board of Union County, Ohio

These webinars will give participants a sound research and theoretical basis on which to scaffold skills to develop interventions for the families they serve and for themselves.

The first webinar (from Sept. 20, 2017) will overview the origins and trends related to the opiate epidemic in Ohio and provide a current environmental scan of the issue. Participants will apply the scan to families they may encounter through an interactive family systems overlay of the processes and impacts of opiate dependence.  Finally, participants will explore the impact of vicarious trauma or “compassion fatigue” they may experience when dealing with these resource-intense families and develop strategies to ensure self-care.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the scope and scale of the opiate epidemic in Ohio
  2. Apply aspects of self-care in the context of their own experience of compassion fatigue when working with families affected by opiate abuse.
  3. Identify the stages of change in the Transtheoretical Model of Change and learn to recognize these stages in their families
  4. Differentiate between varying intensities of intervention and current treatment and recovery support practices in order to assist families in recovery

The second webinar will be Thursday, Nov. 11, 2017 from noon- 1:30 p.m. EST.
