Cultural humility emphasizes an ongoing process of continual learning and critical self-reflection to work effectively with diverse families and communities, and challenge institutions to take accountability for their practices. Students are expected to encounter unfamiliar situations at the start of the cultural humility process and are assumed to handle challenges proactively. Today’s political restriction of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives requires Family Science students to seek additional support to stay motivated for continual learning. During this Teaching Tuesday, teaching and supportive strategies to address such barriers in building cultural humility will be shared. Participants will be encouraged to evaluate their professional development and need for community as they facilitate cultural humility in student learning. 

After a brief presentation, participants will have the opportunity to discuss: 

• the fit of Family Science courses into the cultural humility framework. 

• overcoming stumbling blocks encountered in the learning process. 

• how to stay dedicated and support oneself as anti-DEI initiatives unfold.

About the Presenter 

Dee Hill-Zuganelli, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Child and Family Studies at Berea College who joined the faculty in 2016 and became a member of NCFR in 2017.

He earned his M.S. degree in Family Studies, with a concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Kentucky and a second M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Arizona.

With a career start in the community mental health and nonprofit sector, Dr. Hill-Zuganelli brings a practitioner-focused, multidisciplinary approach to promoting sustainable self-development and training students to confront barriers that prevent effective cross-cultural working relationships. 

About NCFR Teaching Tuesdays

Teaching Tuesdays is a quarterly, interactive opportunity for NCFR members who teach in an academic setting to learn more about academic teaching. Presenter(s) will talk briefly about a topic related to teaching followed by a discussion with the presenter(s) and audience members. The discussion will focus on applying the information presented to enhance classroom pedagogy.
