Instructions for Authors: Journal of Family Theory & Review

The Journal of Family Theory & Review is a peer-reviewed journal published by the National Council on Family Relations focused on family theory and the critical review of research. JFTR publishes original contributions in all areas of family theory, including advances in theory development, critical analyses and new interpretations of existing theory, and analyses of the interface of theory and method. We also publish integrative systematic or meta-analytic reviews of research and critical book and media reviews. We do not publish empirical, data-based articles. JFTR is devoted to theoretically informed contributions.

Submission Guidelines

  • Submit manuscripts online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jftr.
  • Submit only previously unpublished work.
  • A manuscript submission fee of $25 US is required for NCFR members and $35 US for authors who are not NCFR members.
  • Prior to publication in JFTR, all authors must sign a copyright agreement.
  • Comments on articles published in JFTR are evaluated the same as other manuscripts. If the comment is accepted for publication, the author(s) of the original article will be invited to reply. Comment and reply are published simultaneously in the Feedback section of JFTR.

Masking Guidelines

JFTR has a policy of anonymous or masked review. Manuscripts should not include authors’ names, institutional affiliations, or contact information on the title page. Authors should mask only self-references that could be identifying. For example, if you are citing your own work using first person, self-references should be masked (e.g., In the current study, we expand on our prior work which examined xxx [Author, Year]). Authors should not mask self-references that they do not identify in the text as being their own work. This will be the case most often. For example, if you are citing your own work using third person, your self-citation should not be masked. In this case, masking the citation is more likely to threaten the review process, as reviewers may be familiar with the work being cited, thus masking the citation makes it obvious whose paper the reviewers are reading.

Manuscript Preparation

JFTR follows the guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition (APA). A general section (pp. 29-67) covers manuscript preparation.

Consult APA guidelines especially for writing and grammar usage, bias-free language, mechanics of style, and reference citations.

  • Double-space all parts of the manuscript, including text, headings, abstract, quotations, and references. See instructions on Tables and Figures for spacing.
  • Authors should upload a Cover Letter to the Editor, and a minimum of two documents: the main document without author details, and the title page with author details. That is, the title page with author information and author note (including affiliation and acknowledgements) should be uploaded separately from the main document.
  • The components of the Main Document should be arranged in the following order:
  1. Title
  2. Abstract
  3. Text of article
  4. References
  5. Tables (if any)
  6. Figure (if any)
  7. Appendices (if any)
  • Use 12-point font and save your file in Microsoft Word.
  • An abstract of no more than 150 words should precede the body of the paper.
  • Include DOI numbers in references (see APA Publication Manual, 7th ed., pp. 299–300).
  • Avoid the use of footnotes in the body of the paper.
  • Keep tables and figures to a minimum. (See APA Publication Manual, Chapter 7).
  • There are no page limits for manuscripts, but a reasonable guide is about 30-40 manuscript pages inclusive of references for a general submission, and 10-15 pages for an Emerging Voices submission.
  • Consult Wiley Author Services for image submission: https://authorservices.wiley.com/author-resources/Journal-Authors/Prepare/manuscript-preparation-guidelines.html/figure-preparation.html
  • Line art should be saved as EPS or PDF with resolution of 600-10000dpi. Images should be saved as TIFF, PNG, or EPS with a resolution of 300 dpi.
  • Authors will have the opportunity to make corrections to proofs. The expected turnaround time is 48 hours of receipt to ensure publication in the next available issue.
