This preconference experience will connect you with local Minneapolis organizations that have recognized some of the unique needs of youth in their communities and are working to support them during a significant developmental stage. Various organizations will share their experiences with attendees, will describe the challenges and strengths of their participants and the programs in which they engage youth and their families.

Participants will find opportunities to visit a diverse neighborhood, shop, taste local food, and above all consider how family professionals can engage in research, teaching, and outreach to contribute to youth well-being.

These topics will be covered: intersectionality among youth; American Indian cultural programs; Somali youth involvement; gender, sexual orientation, and gender roles; human/youth trafficking; and restorative justice with youth.

Price: $40 for professionals, $25 for students (includes breakfast)

Itinerary

8 a.m.: Bus transport leaves from conference hotel

8:30-9 a.m.: Breakfast at the Gatherings Cafe, Minneapolis American Indian Center

9-11 a.m.: Panel presentation and gallery tour at the Minneapolis American Indian Center

11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Walk to and visit Karmel Square, a Somali shopping mall

1:30 p.m.: Bus transport returns participants to conference hotel
