Rubén Parra-Cardona, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Steve Hicks School of Social Work, University of Texas at Austin, Coordinator For Initiatives in Mexico and Latin America, Co-Director, Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

Dr. Parra-Cardona will present 10 years of a collaborative program of parenting prevention research between the U.S. and Mexico. Specifically, parallel programs of research will be described focused on the cultural adaptation of the evidence-based parenting intervention known as GenerationPMTO. Reflections will address the ways in which cultural adaptations were refined according to contrasting contexts in the U.S., as well as northern and central Mexico. For example, in the U.S., prevention interventions have been consistently revised to address issues of racism and discrimination towards Latinx immigrants. In Mexico, although a randomized controlled trial was successfully completed in the Distrito Federal, alternative approaches were followed in Northern Mexico to accommodate to the challenges of community violence. Implications for applied prevention work with Latinx populations in the U.S. and Latin America will be discussed.
