Abstract(s)

139-01: Introductory Remarks

M. Elise Radina, Ph.D., CFLE, Miami University-Ohio; Áine Humble, Ph.D., CFLE, Mount Saint Vincent University

This workshop is inspired by a 2019 book called “How Qualitative Data Analysis Happens: Moving Beyond ‘Themes Emerged’" www.routledge.com/9781138044678), which was written in response to a recognition that, far too often, little detail is provided about how qualitative data analysis actually occurs. For example, methods sections of journal articles typically include citations to terms such as “open coding” or include the generic phrase “themes emerged,” both of which offer little to readers about the realities of how qualitative data analysis actually occurs. Following introductory remarks by the editors of the book (Dr. Áine Humble and Dr. Elise Radina), two researchers (Dr. Katherine Kuvalanka and Dr. Emma Potter) will present “behind the scenes” narratives of how they (and the people they worked with) made sense of their qualitative data. Reflexivity will also be modelled to participants through the four authors then dialoguing about the two authors’ experiences, in front of the audience. A question period will conclude this workshop.

Objectives

- Participants will become aware of how the overuse of the phrase "themes emerged" in the presentation of qualitative research has obscured the realities and rigor of qualitative methodologies.
- Participants will gain an appreciation for the complexity of qualitative data analysis (e.g., themes no not emerge).
- Participants will develop an understanding the value of dialogue with fellow researchers and others about qualitative data analysis processes.
