About the Session
Poster Session 5: Teaching in the Academic Setting
Presenters: Sarah Taylor, Tiffany Brown, Nilufer Medora
Summary
A common way Family Science students develop cultural competence is through study abroad programs (Harris et al., 2019).Although there is much empirical research on the positive implications of study abroad programs, there is less research on the challenges experienced by study abroad students. The present qualitative study addresses this negative space within the family science-related study abroad literature by examining the challenges experienced in asample of college undergraduate students (N = 80)participating in the Semester at Sea study abroad program. Six major themes emerged from the date including: 1.) cognitive challenges; 2.) social challenges; 3.) academic challenges; 4.) cultural challenges; 5) logistical challenges; and 6) emotional challenges. Recommendations for Family Science faculty in developing and implementing study abroad programs are examined.

-- By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to identify effective ways to address challenges experienced by students in study abroad programs.
-- By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to develop recommendations for teaching high impact study abroad programs in family science.
