About the Session

Poster Session 5: Violence, Abuse, and Discrimination

Presenter: Naomi Wheeler

Summary
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) predict a higher likelihood of victimization and perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV). Yet, less is known for the role of ACE in development of intimate partner power and control dynamics such as the types of violence/violence severity experienced or attitudes about equality, fairness, and caring in an intimate relationship. In the current study, we analyzed data from 332 adults enrolled in a community-based, individual-oriented relationship education program to examine differences in indicators of power, control, and equity in respondent's current or most recent intimate relationship by ACE score. We discuss implications for practice including related opportunities for screening, risk assessment, and intervention.

Objectives
-- Participants will be able to identify Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) and social/relational correlates demonstrated in the literature.
-- Participants will be able to identify the influence of ACE for beliefs about relationship equity as well as power and control dynamics associated with Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).
-- Participants will discuss implications of ACE-IPV connections for prevention and Relationship Education as an intervention with individuals with economic disadvantage and a racial/ethnic minority background.

Subject Codes: intimate partner violence (IPV), adversity, vulnerabilities
Population Codes: low income
Method and Approach Codes: path analysis, mediation/indirect effects models
