Guidance for Practitioners on Supporting Parent-Child Communication about Sexual Health
Presenters: Deborah M. Roffman, CFLE, CSE
A discussion with a young child about their sexual health needs to be clear, age-specific, and include current research surrounding sexuality. These conversations can be particularly intimidating for guardians, especially for adults who have received little to no education on sexuality themselves. It is important for Family Life Educators (e.g., parent educators) and other practitioners to know how to best equip guardians to hold these difficult conversations themselves, or advocate for changes in the school system.
In this webinar, Deborah Roffman, CFLE, CSE, will summarize common questions asked by young children and provide guidance on how practitioners can guide guardians to respond to these questions. Specifically, the presenter will teach attendees how to assist guardians to (1) create authentic partnerships between families and schools based in children's core developmental needs and the shared roles of key nurturers in children's lives; (2) respond successfully to "pushback" and other potential barriers regarding the education of younger children around sexuality and gender; and (3) recruit allies who will lend support to establishing accurate cognitively congruent benchmarks.
Thus, attendees will leave this webinar with the ability to:
-
Guide guardians on how to provide age-appropriate responses to common questions children ask about sexuality;
-
Articulate children's five core nurturing needs and the five corresponding roles for nurturing adults to guide interactions about sexuality; and
-
Implement strategies to overcome barriers of teaching sexuality and gender programs in educational settings.
Approved for 1.5 hours of CFLE continuing education.
