Introduction to T-Tests
T-tests are commonly used in Family Science to understand whether two groups are different. For example, practitioners use this method to test whether their program was successful or evaluate the impact of an intervention while researchers use it to see if their group of interest differs from the general population. This webinar will provide an introduction and demonstrate t-tests using examples from the Family Science discipline.
Specifically, attendees will gain a stronger understanding of the benefits and limitations of using t-tests to answer research questions, as well as provide a variety of examples of when to use a t-test. This webinar will cover when and how to use t-tests to answer research questions, how to interpret results, and how to run the t-test in a statistical software (primarily in SPSS, but additional resources will be provided for STATA and MPLUS). This webinar is a great way to build confidence in doing t-tests as well as refresh and enhance existing skills.
Overall, attendees will leave this webinar with the ability to:
- Assess the benefits and limitations of running t-tests with your data
- Run a t-test on real examples in Family Science during and after the webinar
- Interpret the results of a t-test to answer a variety of research questions

About the Presenter
Chelsea M. Spencer, Ph.D., is a research assistant professor at Kansas State University in the couple and family therapy program. Dr. Spencer studies intimate partner violence, intimate partner homicide, and sexual violence. She is currently funded by the Department of Defense and the United States Air Force to conduct research in violence prevention and intervention efforts. She specializes in quantitative methods and is passionate about teaching statistics in a relatable, engaging manner that promotes confidence.
