Cross-Cultural Competence in Family Science
Why does culture matter in the work you do with families? How does it matter?
In this webinar, you'll learn from marriage and family therapist William D. Allen, Ph.D., the fundamentals of cross-cultural competence. The webinar builds on the work of scholars from the family field, and that of others in allied disciplines (e.g., Sue and Sue). The intended audience is family practitioners, scholars and students interested in deepening their understanding of why and how culture matters when working with families.

About the Presenter
William D. Allen, Ph.D., is a licensed marriage and family therapist and owner of Healing Bonds, a private therapeutic practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Dr. Allen consults with government agencies and social service organizations on a range of subjects related to family mental health and well-being. He is an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota. His research interests include the intersection of families and ethnicity, and the important roles males play in family life across the lifespan. His publications include exploration of effective therapies for youth of color in the nation's child welfare system and African-American males, and clinical implications of research on marriage and parenting in culturally diverse families. In addition to serving on the boards of the Minnesota Association of Black Psychologists, the Minnesota Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and the University of Minnesota's Consortium on Youth and Families, Dr. Allen has served on the board and is currently president-elect of the National Council on Family Relations.
