Kale Monk, Ph.D., CFLE, has been named as one of six Engagement Scholars by the University of Missouri to develop public engagement plans for his research over the course of a yearlong program. Dr. Monk brings a wealth of experience in the area of public scholarship, having co-presented both an NCFR conference session and an NCFR webinar on this topic in 2020.

Dr. Monk is an assistant professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Science and state specialist for extension at the University of Missouri. His research is focused on romantic relationships and he has several projects focused on making research public. Learn more.

The Illinois State University Council on Family Relations (ISU-CFR) — a student affiliate of NCFR — was recently recognized in their university news for successful efforts to keep the group active and meaningful throughout the pandemic. The student group is led by adviser Bill Anderson, Ph.D., CFLE.  ISU-CFR meetings have featured past members, social workers, teachers, occupational therapists, and others who still value the group and share their experiences and expertise as invited speakers. These meeting are then made available on the ISU-CFR YouTube channel created by current president and NCFR member, Rosamar Perez.

Ms. Perez expressed the importance of maintaining a connection between current students and alumni who founded and helped build the student organization. She added that, “alumni are now in fields that current [students] may be interested in. By inviting alumni back and keeping in touch with them, our current members can see what their future may look like and, in a way, network.”  Read more.

Janeal M. White, M.S., CFLE, MIE, and Ilya Okhotnikov, Ph.D., CFLE, both of McNeese State University’s Family Science program, were recently selected for a $13,000 eLearning Innovation Grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents for development of the Service To Another Rewards (STAR) Service-Learning Curriculum Toolkit. The STAR Project Toolkit builds on their current service-learning program within McNeese Family Science and will create a 6-module, LMS integration-ready curriculum for Louisiana faculty utilization within fully online, undergraduate courses. Curriculum development is planned for fall, 2021 with the statewide pilot planned for spring, 2022.

Building on more than twenty years of experience facilitating service-learning programs with youth, Ms. White will serve as project director leading curriculum development and implementation while Dr. Okhotnikov will coordinate evaluation and analysis as the primary investigator.
